We are going to erect a special target for patterning shotguns. This will probably be on the rifle range. Optimum distance for this is 40 yards. Draw a outline of a duck or whatever on the board and shoot with the different charges and ammo brands ( 6 shots of each) that you normally use. The shot pattern should be around 30 inches at this distance. Preferably wearing the clothes you wear while hunting. This will tell you where you are hitting or where your shot pattern is going. Also, this is not target work. Keeping the 40 yard distance in mind and with the muzzle pointed downrange walk from either side and shoot as if you had just jumped a bird. This can be at an angle to the target or straight on. Mark the center of each shot pattern and remember where your patterns are going so that corrective action can be taken. Gary Kruger, V.P.
